Key takeaways
- A 2026 BrightLocal study of 200,000 local AI searches found business websites were the most-cited source, ahead of Google Business Profiles and Yelp.
- Ranking in Google Maps doesn't guarantee showing up in AI answers. The overlap is far from complete.
- ChatGPT leans more on Bing and Yelp than Google does, so your listings need to match everywhere, not just on Google.
- AI answers change from one search to the next. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
- There's no special AI file or trick. Google says the same fundamentals that help in search help in its AI features.
Why this matters now
More people are asking an AI tool who to call instead of scrolling a list. They type "who's the best roofer in Prescott?" into ChatGPT, or Google answers with an AI Overview or AI Mode before the map results. These tools usually name just a handful of businesses.
The good news: the signals they use are mostly the same ones that already help you on Google. The difference is how much weight they put on each one.
What the research found
In September 2026 BrightLocal published a study of about 200,000 local searches run through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. A few findings stand out for local service businesses:
- Business websites were the most-cited source, at about 42% of citations. Google Business Profiles were second at about 29%, and Yelp third at about 9.5%.
- Maps rankings don't carry over automatically. The businesses tracked showed up in about 66% of Maps searches, but only about 32 to 38% of AI searches.
- ChatGPT leaned on Yelp and Bing more than on Google Business Profile.
- Answers vary from run to run. The same question often returned mostly different businesses when asked again.
Google is also moving in this direction. In October 2026 it began adding more links to websites inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, and started testing an "official website" section at the top of some answers.
What AI tools read about your business
Your website
This is the biggest one. AI tools quote websites that clearly say what you do, where you do it and what it costs. That means a page per service, a page per town you serve, real answers to common questions (price ranges, how fast you can come out, what areas you cover), and your name, address and phone matching your listings.
Your Google Business Profile
Categories, services, hours, reviews and photos all feed Google's AI answers and Ask Maps. Since Google removed the profile Q&A section, the answers to customer questions need to live on your website and in your reviews.
Your other listings
Bing Places matters because ChatGPT's search leans on Bing. Apple Business Connect matters for Siri and Apple Maps. Yelp shows up as a cited source again and again. If your hours or phone number differ between them, AI tools can repeat the wrong one.
Reviews and mentions
AI answers often summarize what reviewers say: "fast", "fair price", "cleaned up after". Reviews that describe the actual job give the AI something specific to repeat. Mentions on local news sites, chamber pages and industry directories help confirm you're a real, established business.
What doesn't work
- Special AI files. In June 2026 Google said sites don't need an llms.txt file to appear in its AI answers. Google's May 2026 guide to its AI features says the same fundamentals apply as in regular search.
- AI-written filler. Google updated its guidance on AI-generated content in October 2026. Pages written by AI aren't banned, but thin pages made to game rankings fall under its spam policies, and Google says those policies apply to AI answers too.
- Guarantees. Since answers change from one search to the next, nobody can promise you'll be the one named. What you can do is make your business the easiest one for the AI to describe accurately.
A short AI visibility checklist
- Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Ask Maps who they'd recommend for your service in your town. Note who comes up and what they say about you.
- Make sure your website has a page for each main service and each town, with plain answers to the questions customers ask.
- Match your name, address, phone and hours on Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp.
- Keep reviews coming and reply to every one.
- Check again every month. AI answers change.
